ALA 2010

The American Library Association Conference in DC was fantastic. We met some of our favorite librarians and book bloggers, who have been our twitter friends for a long time. One of them was Liz B., who wrote one of the first online reviews of BEAUTIFUL CREATURES! Michelle organized the event, and we had such a good time.

We also met lots of our online friends at the conference: Elizabeth Law from Egmont, Rebecca Sutton (Fallen Archangel), Mitali Dave (Alley of Books), Andye & Amy (Reading Teen & Reading Teen 2) S.F. Robertson Waste Paper Prose!

Breakfast with Our Favorite Bloggers – (Back Row) Katie (Katie Tweets YA), Drea (Awaiting Serenity), Alexa Barry (Not Enough Bookshelves), Kami, Tiffany (HS Librarian), Michelle (GalleySmith)

(Front Row) Sarah (Green Bean Teen Queen), Margie, Liz B. (A Chair, a Fireplace & a Tea Cozy) & Meaghan (A Bookworm’s Haven)

Then we met up with our editor Julie Scheina, author Malinda Lo (ASH, HUNTRESS), her editor Kate Sullivan, and author Melissa Walker for our Pre-conference Panel Web 2.0. Melissa is the author of novels (LOVESTRUCK SUMMER), magazine articles & she writes a great series for her blog about book covers called “Cover Stories.” Malinda Lo is one of the most talented and lyrical writers in YA.

A whole room full of librarians – what could be more fun?

At Web 2.0, we talked about how we use Skype, Facebook, Twitter & other online tools to speak to libraries, classrooms, and readers around the world. Malinda & Melissa were a tough act to follow.

Kate Sullivan from Little, Brown tweeted a picture of the spiral of BEAUTIFUL DARKNESS ARCs she helped create at the Hachette booth. So after the panel, we grabbed Julie & Diana Peterfreund, one of our favorite authors, and hit the ALA preview. Diana is the author of RAMPANT & ASCENDANT, and she gives new meaning to strong female characters. If you haven’t read RAMPANT, hurry up before ASCENDANT hits shelves!

While we were walking the floor, we ran into author & fellow Morris nominee Nina LaCour (HOLD STILL), author/editor David Levithan (NICK & NORAH’S INFINITE PLAYLIST & WILL GRAYSON, WILL GRAYSON) & author John Green (PAPER TOWNS & WILL GRAYSON, WILL GRAYSON). John was making an ALA highlights vlog for his brother Hank.

Watch it here.

On Friday night, we joined our editors Julie Scheina & Jennifer Hunt and Victoria Stapleton, the Head of Library Services for Little, Brown to attend the ALA Morris Award dinner for the nominees, the selection committee of librarians & our publishing teams. We loved meeting the librarians that selected BEAUTIFUL CREATURES & the other nominees: Malinda Lo (ASH), Amy Huntley (EVERAFTER), Nina LaCour (HOLD STILL) & the Winner, L.K. Madigan (FLASH BURNOUT). It was an honor to be among these talented authors and a group of brilliant & dedicated librarians.

The lovely Melissa Marr, YA goddess & author of WICKED LOVELY, INK EXCHANGE, FRAGILE ETERNITY & RADIANT SHADOWS. We also saw our friend Jon Skovron, author of STRUTS & FRETS — a fantastic read– and authors Karen Kincy (OTHER) & Holly Black (TITHE, VALIANT, IRONSIDE & WHITE CAT), although we have no photographic evidence.

You actually do have photographic evidence of me in line for your signing! I’m the one in the lime green shirt and hair in her face, looking away from the camera (fourth photo from the bottom). And of course I have photographic evidence on my website. Had so much fun at ALA!
